2014

Jesuits in Formation

&

Magis

01

The COMMUNICATING FAITH project began when I was invited to take part – as workshop organiser
& film-maker – in an event organised by Jesuits in Britain to engage Jesuits ‘in formation’ (training
for the ministry) in the way of using/engaging with the media. One of the results of that wonderful
weekend was the short film ‘Jesuits in Formation’ included here. I am proud to say this was the first
film in which I worked with both my children: Lottie (camera) Sam (editing). The other result was a
growing relationship with some of the young Jesuits (especially Samuel Overloop & Niall Leahy)
which led to an invite for myself &; Sam to the Dublin MAGIS they were organising that summer.

The idea was to support pilgrims in making their own outputs reflecting on their faith & experiences
and to capture the spirit of the event as a whole. The results of both activities are here as the film
‘Magis 2014: Many Gifts, One Spirit’ and elsewhere on this site in the ‘pilgrims’ section of the
‘library.’

A further ‘product’ of this activity was a growing feeling of connection with my (very lapsed) catholic
faith. By the time Niall invited me to join his Magis in the summer of 2017 I was engaged not as film-
maker but as a pilgrim. Fortunately for me on this occasion I was accompanied by a talented young
Documentarian – Tom Pollard – whose film ‘Connection’ forms the cornerstone of this project.
